New musical tales from David Storey this evening

It’s always a pleasure to hear the heartfelt and elegantly crafted ballads and story songs of Roots/Country songwriter David Storey, whether he’s performing solo or with a backing band.  But tonight’s early evening short show at Tranzac Club downtown promises additional appeal as he will be sharing tunes from a new album scheduled to be released next spring with a new band.

We’ve raved in the past about his previous albums and the deft storytelling ability he combines with a genuine feeling of integrity that gives the sense he’s baring his soul and sharing intimate autobiographical moments of his life on many of his songs, and doing so in an entertaining, captivating way, as I described his debut Movin’ On ep in a 2015 article.

I was rather sad, therefore, when two years ago, as we reported at the time, he relocated to B.C. for eight months to engage in yet another project related to the “Corner Gas” comedy franchise he co-founded and co-wrote, since to do so he basically had to put his music career on hiatus for the duration, just after releasing the wonderful Comin’ Home album.

But, as we noted earlier this year, he’s been back in town for the past year now and once again has been a regular participant at open stages and in showcase gigs across the city.  And during that time he’s been writing, of course, and recording the new album, for which this evening’s 6-8 affair is being billed as a “pre-release show.”

The new band, which he’s dubbed The Roadside Scholars, contains some pretty hefty talent in its own right.  It includes Lawrie Ingles and Henry Lees (who together are aka Soul Maitre D’s) along with ubiquitous Roots-Country accompanists Bob Cohen  and Howard Rabkin.

The show takes place in the cozy Southern Cross Lounge of the room at 292 Brunswick Ave. just south of Bloor West in the Annex area and there’s no cover.  But believe me, after you hear him you’ll thank yourself for bringing along a little extra coin so you can pick up one or both of David’s previous discs.
